What Is a CNC Control Unit?

A CNC control unit, or Computer Numerical Controller, is the core of a CNC machining centre. In addition to controlling the machine’s basic inputs and outputs—such as starting or stopping a motor and switching heaters on or off—it provides motion control for connected servo motors, stepper motors and encoder-equipped electric motors.

The controller executes commands received from input devices connected to the machine. These may include a keyboard, mouse and computer monitor or a dedicated LCD operator panel. CNC software is also required to communicate the machining operations and operating conditions to the controller accurately.

Where Are CNC Control Units Used?

CNC controllers are commonly used in machine tools equipped with one or more cutting or processing tools. The machine completes the required operation according to programmed coordinates. Coordinates may be entered manually or generated automatically by CAD/CAM software such as AutoCAD, TpaCad, Alphacam, ArtCAM and SolidWorks.
